The Effects of Omega-3 Fatty Acids on Novel Anti-Inflammatory Metabolites on Telomere Length in Early and Later Life: Potential Implications for Long Term Cardiovascular Risk.

Summary

Obesity and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are associated with chronic inflammation. This study is the first to address in humans novel mechanisms which may contribute to effects of omega-3 fatty acids on reducing cardiovascular (CV) risk by reducing inflammation and cell senescence.

This study aims to examine the effects of supplementing omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish oils on novel anti-inflammatory metabolites, telomere length, as well as metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers in pregnant mothers and infants.

Why my research is important

A global epidemic of childhood obesity is projected to cause a dramatic increase in adult CV risk. Early, perinatal omega-3 fatty acid status profoundly affects adult CV health in animal studies. Hence, childhood CV risk may track through life. Omega-3 fatty acids administered early in life has the potential to modify traditional CV risk factors, obesity-related metabolic risk, inflammation and possibly oxidative stress and telomere length. This study represents a unique opportunity to build upon the investment in two established randomized controlled trials. It is expected that these two trials will elucidate whether fish oils in pregnancy or infancy influences cardiovascular risk factors as has been shown in animal models. The project addresses novel mechanisms as to how omega-3 fatty acids may benefit cardiovascular health. Prevention in early life will have major public health benefits.
